The 15 round magazines from the 5906 works perfectly in the 6906. The Smith and Wesson 5906 (4-inch barrel, 15 round magazine) and the 6906 (3 ½ inch barrel and 12 round magazine) are stripped using the exact same procedures. This is as far as the pistol needs to be stripped for cleaning and maintenance: ** (The hammer will drop as you pull the slide off)īeing very careful apply pressure to the recoil spring to remove it from the notch in the barrel lug:

Hold the spring assembly and slide firmly as you remove. Using both hands pull the slide from the frame, careful not to pop the recoil spring assembly as you do. When you have pushed it as far as you can from the other side, grab hold of the slide stop and pull it the remainder of the way out: You then use a finger from your other hand to push on the slide stop pin as far as you can into the indent: You push back on the slide to line up the slide stop on the frame with the notch on the slide: This is what you use to push out the slide stop: On the right side of the frame you will see an indent with a knob in the center. Then clear the chamber and visually inspect to make sure it is empty: Of course - ALWAYS make sure the weapon is UNLOADED!!!

The DAO 'spacer" is on the top, and the standard TDA sear release lever is on the bottom.*Field Breakdown of Smith And Wesson 5906* It lacks the extended 'foot' of the standard lever, and has a couple of holes punched in the body (unlike the solid TDA lever, to help make it easily identifiable from the TDA lever, presuming someone missed seeing the lack of a 'foot').įorgive this less than optimal picture, but it ought to serve to illustrate the basic difference between the TDA & DAO levers. The spacer lever is basically a modified sear release lever. If there's room in your 5946 for the "spacer" lever alongside the firing pin safety lever, then a spring must be used. If the frame has space for only 1 lever, a spring must not be used. I'll run some rounds through this morning and report back.ĭue to changes in how the older DAO frames were machined, they gave armorers the Spring Rule to use when determining whether there must be a spring underneath the firing pin safety lever.īasically, when looking at the right side of the frame (to the right of the hammer), if the frame has space for 2 levers, a spring must be used. Removing the spring remedied the problem for me. Per the post linked on the similar problem, Fastbolt states that for DOA guns there should 'Not' be a spring under the firing pin safety lever ( Need Help/Advice with reassembly of 5946 /Slide problem(PICTURES) entry #12). See the rearShot.jpg.ĭoes anyone have an idea what the heck I'm missing or assembled incorrectly? I think I've assembled the drawbar and disconnector correctly. The part doesn't fit in the lever slot with the firing pin safety lever and the general shape doesn't drop down to the cross pin properly either. Unfortunately, the new sear release lever doesn't fit this gun. I'm not sure how I lost a big piece like that but the schematic must be right, doesn't it? I order the part and it arrives today.

I figured I must have lost something so I went to the Numrich site and the schematic for the 5946 shows that indeed it has a sear release lever. I noticed that there was a lot of slop between the firing pin safety lever and the hammer. The slide will run all the way back on the rails as long as the firing pin safety lever is removed. Now I can't get it re-assembled so that the slide will move all the way back. I stripped a 5946 last week and cleaned it thoroughly.
